Man killed in single-car crash

AUSTELL, Ga. -- Cobb County police are investigating a single-car accident that killed an Austell man.

It happened Friday shortly before 10 p.m. on Riverside Parkway, just south of Hartman Road in Austell.

A preliminary investigation revealed a Chevrolet Impala was traveling southwest on Riverside Parkway when it left the road, drove onto a grassy shoulder and hit a tree.

The driver, 21-year-old Jaquayle Wilson, was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A juvenile passenger was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident is under investigation.

Weekend roadwork: Sign structure and bridge repairs

(WXIA) -- Drivers in the Atlanta area are asked to avoid the southwest side of Interstate 285 this weekend, as construction crews will complete road projects in the area.

Weekend roadwork will take place on several other stretches of highway and interstate throughout metro Atlanta as well. The rainy weather may delay some projects.

Planned work includes:

Coweta County
* 1 northbound lane of I-85 will be closed between two miles north of Highway 34 and McCollum-Sharpsburg Road from 8 a.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for sweeping.

SPLOST funds help firefighters buy new thermal imaging cameras

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services recently purchased 60 new thermal imaging cameras. The cameras will replace 42 old ones.

Firefighter Denell Boyd said the cameras help fire crews find victims in smoky structures with little to no visibility. They also allow firefighters to discover hot spots and hidden fires behind walls and ceilings.

The new cameras use advanced technology to produce sharper and brighter images than the old ones, according to Boyd.

The fire department used 2011 SPLOST funds to pay for the cameras.

10 north Ga. students chosen for Disney Dreamers Academy

(WXIA) -- Ten high school students from the Atlanta area are among only 100 teens nationwide to be selected for the 2015 Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and ESSENCE Magazine.

The winners were selected from among nearly 10,000 applicants nationwide. They will travel to Walt Disney World Resort in March to participate in a prestigious educational and mentoring program.

Dreamers, as program participants are called, will learn life skills such as communication techniques and networking, and will explore possible career paths.

AUSTELL, Ga. -- A 47-year-old Mableton woman was killed in an accident within the city limits of Austell.

It happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. Monday on C.H. James Parkway near Garrett Road.

Cobb County police said the victim, Shan Ray, was driving south toward Garrett Road when she swerved into the left turn lane and clipped the back of a container being hauled by an International tractor trailer. Investigators said the big rig was stopped in the lane and waiting to turn.

Ray was pronounced dead at the scene. The 56-year-old International driver was not hurt.

The accident is under investigation. Police do not expect to file any charges.

(WXIA) -- As 2015 rolls on, Georgia Department of Transportation crews will roll too -- to sites across metro Atlanta, where they will work on weekend road projects. (At least it will be sunny!)

This weekend, drivers are encouraged to avoid travel on the west side of Interstate 20 and the east side of I-285, if possible. Delays and lane closures are expected in both areas. All work is weather permitting.

Some of the scheduled projects include:

Cobb County
* 2 eastbound lanes of I-285 will be closed at I-75 Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. for bridge joint repairs.

DeKalb/Fulton counties
* 3 northbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between I-20 and Ga. 400 from 7 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for sign structure work.

Six Flags to hold job fair for 2015 season

AUSTELL, Ga. -- Six Flags Over Georgia is looking to hire 3,000 employees for its 2015 season.

The Cobb County theme park has positions available in several areas, including food service, park services, guest relations, admissions, retail, ride operations, games, security, cash control and marketing research.

The park will hold a job fair on Saturday, Jan. 24. Those who are interested must apply online at sixflagsjobs.com no later than Friday, Jan. 16, before they can attend the fair. Applicants must be at least 15 years old. Those who are qualified will be called for off-site interviews.
