Give Blood in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

ATLANTA -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. helped to change the world over four decades ago.

Now, Metro Atlantans can do their part to make a difference with the simple, selfless act of a blood donation.

Volunteer blood donors will have a chance to give at several local drives on Monday, Jan. 17:

* Gold's Gym (3362 Acworth Summit Boulevard, Acworth, 30101)
2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

* WellStar Cobb Hospital (3950 Austell Road, Austell, 30106)
9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

* Orange United Methodist Church (220 Orange Church Circle, Canton, 30115)
2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

* Johnson Ferry Baptist Church (955 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta, 30068)
1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

African-Americans are especially encouraged to give, as they have a higher percentage of donors with Type O and Type B blood, the two types that usually drop to critically low levels during a shortage. Some African-American donors also have rare types that are unique to their community. But while African-Americans comprise about 13% of the population, they represent less than 1% of blood donors.

For more information, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit the Red Cross Web site to make an appointment to donate blood or platelets.
