Suspect arrested after police chase in Cobb

MABLETON, Ga. -- A brief police chase in Cobb County Tuesday morning ended with one arrest.

The chase happened at around 3 a.m. on Mableton Parkway in Mableton.

Dispatchers said the suspect drove through a DUI checkpoint at Six Flags Drive and Lee Industrial Boulevard, then started the chase when officers began following him.

The man was eventually stopped and arrested outside a RaceTrac on Marietta Boulevard in northwest Atlanta. Cobb County Police said the car he was driving was reported stolen.

The suspect was taken into custody and is being checked to see if he will be charged with DUI. His name was not released.

Police believe speeds in the chase did not exceed 50 mph.

AUSTELL, Ga. -- A homeless man accused of beating an elderly Austell resident to death has been re-indicted by a Cobb County Grand Jury.

Thomas Duane Sparks was arrested on Dec. 19, 2011, a day after prosecutors say he killed 71-year-old Joseph Stahl inside his home.

Sparks, 49, was first indicted in March 2012 on four charges. He now faces charges of malice murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, armed robbery and three counts of felony murder.

The case is set to go to trial on Sept. 23.

Man indicted for sexual battery at White Water

MARIETTA, Ga. -- A Powder Springs man has been indicted by a Cobb County Grand Jury for inappropriately touching three young girls at Six Flags White Water.

Jerry Westbrook, 69, faces three counts of sexual battery. He is charged with grabbing his victims' backsides in a wave pool at the Marietta water park last September.

Investigators said Westbrook held a White Water season pass and was regularly seen trying to make contact with young girls at the park.

The indictment was handed down last week. If convicted, Westbrook faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison for each count.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- One person was shot and another was attacked in unincorporated Norcross Monday morning.

Gwinnett County Police said the shooting happened shortly after 7 a.m. at the Celadon Townhome Apartments in the 6000 block of South Norcross Tucker Road.

Investigators said 28-year-old Steven Carden of Marietta was shot to death, and 28-year-old Thomas Smith of Powder Springs was hit in the head from behind.

Smith was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with serious injuries. He told police that he and Carden were walking through the apartment complex and struck up a conversation with two men shortly before he was hit and Carden was shot.

Police are still speaking with witnesses and following up on leads in this case.

AUSTELL, Ga. -- Cobb County Police are investigating a bank robbery in Austell over the weekend.

The robbery happened shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday at the Regions Bank on Mulkey Road.

Cobb County Police Officer Mike Bowman said an employee was preparing to open the bank for the day when the suspect walked up behind him and demanded money. He ran after receiving cash.

Surveillance cameras inside the bank captured images of the suspect. He is described as a black man in his early 30s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and 165 pounds. He was wearing a Titleist baseball cap, a blue button-down shirt and dark pants, and was armed with a semiautomatic handgun.

AUSTELL, Ga. -- Cobb County Police are working to identify the man who robbed an Austell bank Saturday morning.

The suspect robbed the BB&T Bank on Traemore Parkway at around 8:45 a.m., as employees arrived to open it for the day.

Cobb County Police Officer Mike Bowman said the suspect ran up behind the employees, pulled out a gun and demanded money. He ran after receiving cash.

Bank surveillance cameras captured images of the suspect. Bowman described him as a black man in his late 20's or early 30's, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and 150 pounds, with a stocky build and a dark complexion.

Cobb Police looking for middle school molester

MABLETON, Ga. -- Cobb County Police are trying to find a teenage boy accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old fellow middle school student.

According to an arrest warrant, Travion Malick Hubbard is accused of aggravated sodomy and aggravated child molestation.

It doesn't give his exact age, except to say he's under 18, but he was said to have been a student at Lindley Middle School in Mableton when the alleged attack happened on May 1st.

The warrant claims Hubbard forced a 14-year-old girl into a boys' bathroom, partially undressed her and then performed sexual acts on her.

The school's principal contacted Cobb County campus police within hours of the incident and they contacted Cobb County Police the same night.

Police would not provide any reason why it took them until May 30 to swear out the arrest warrant .

Even though he's a juvenile, Hubbard is being charged as an adult.
