Time to get a flu shot

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Flu season will be here before we know it, and the Cobb & Douglas Public Health Immunization Clinic is going mobile in an effort to help citizens combat the virus.

In addition to offering flu vaccinations to everyone six months and older at all public health centers, CDPH is giving them at local workplaces and events for groups of 20 or more people.

"We are committed to ensuring everyone is properly protected, so we're encouraging community members to walk in to one of our many clinic locations. However, we're also ready and willing to come to any group in Cobb or Douglas County that has 20 or more people who'd like to get immunized," said Karen Thomas, district immunization director for CDPH.

This year's flu vaccine costs $20. Children without health insurance or who receive Medicaid PeachCare are eligible for state supplied vaccines for a sliding administration fee. Also, anyone with state health benefits with Cigna or UnitedHealthcare may have the total cost of their flu shots billed to their insurance plans with no co-pays.

Appointments are not required to receive flu vaccines from CDPH.

"Whether people walk in or take advantage of our mobile immunization team, we want to remind individuals that the flu vaccine provides the best protection against the flu," Thomas said.

The CDPH also recommends taking a few simple steps to reduce the risk of getting the flu:

* Wash hands often with soap/water or an alcohol-based cleanser
* Avoid touching eyes/nose/mouth
* Do not share utensils/drinking glasses/towels, etc.
* Cover nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing, then put tissues in the trash and wash hands
