Mother kills 3 children before committing suicide

AUSTELL, GA (WXIA) – An investigation is underway after police said a mother killed her three young children before killing herself last month.

According to the Cobb County Medical Examiner, Keisha Holmes died by hanging herself. Examiners are awaiting more test results to determine how her children were killed. There were no overt signs of trauma to the children.

A maintenance man who arrived to perform repairs in the family's apartment discovered the grim scene.

Holmes, 35, killed her three children – 4- and 10-year old boys and her 9-month-old daughter – before committing suicide. Her 10-year-old son attended nearby Sanders Elementary School. Flags at the school were being flown at half-staff last Wednesday, and the Cobb County Schools said they had counselors at the school.

Holmes was a Marine veteran. Atlanta VA Medical Center Public Affairs Officer Greg Kendall released a statement about her passing:

The Atlanta VA Medical Center was deeply saddened to learn of the recent death of Veteran Kisha Holmes and her three children. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time.

To protect the Veteran's privacy, we cannot comment on the specifics of this case. For all outpatient suicides, we initiate a peer review of the care recently provided, and the Suicide Prevention Coordinator also does a detailed, standardized medical record review and report which is submitted to VA's national Suicide Prevention Program. We immediately contact the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) and the VA Central Office when instances of this nature occur and remain in constant contact to ensure appropriate follow up and communication.

Information was very difficult to come by from neighbors, who said they knew little about her. There is virtually no footprint on social media about Holmes. Police said they had a difficult time finding relatives to notify.
