Cobb officer shooting leads to manhunt for suspect

COBB COUNTY, Ga. --  Officers of the Cobb County Police Department are on the hunt for a man who they say shot an officer early Friday morning.

The officer was shot around 1:15, at the Concord Chase Apartments, which is in the 300 block of Hurt Road in Smyrna.

Officer Mike Bowman described the suspect as a black male with a dark complexion. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, khaki shorts. He has short hair, worn in twists. The suspect is between 5' 10" - 6' tall with a thin build, and in his late teens to early 20's.

Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call 911. Further, Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $5,000 to anyone with information leading to an arrest of the suspect.

Also on scene is the DeKalb County air unit. Smyrna and Austell units are helping to locate the man. Authorities believe the man is still in the area, Bowman said.

He said a perimeter was established by S.W.A.T., K-9 units and a chopper to find the suspect immediately after police arrived to the apartments. Police say the man is extremely dangerous, and likely armed.

Although the name of the officer who was shot has yet to be released, Bowman said he is in good condition. Bowman would not comment on where he was shot or the extent of his injuries.

As many residents began waking up, Cobb County police sent out a safety alert to residents to lookout for the shooting suspect. Police were in yards of some homes.

Cobb Police have set up a media staging area about a mile from the scene in what they call a "safe zone." You can follow team coverage with Julie Wolfe and Jeremy Campbell on Twitter.
