BEST SPOTS: Community Swimming Pools

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- For this week’s installment of Best Spots, we've compiled a list of public pools in the area for you, your family and friends to take a dip and cool off in the heat of the summer sun (or in an aquatic center).

With an economy like ours, it’s imperative that people look for a bargain wherever they can and public pools offer fun that’s easy on the pockets. Check out these local pools and enjoy a classic, cost-effective, exciting summertime experience.

Douglas County

Boundary Waters Aquatic Park is located in Douglas County and it offers year-round swimming in an “8-lane, 25-yard heated competition pool, and a 4-lane, heated therapeutic/teaching pool”. The park offers $3.00 daily passes and $4.00 passes for non-residents. It’s is located at 5000 Georgia Highway 92 in Douglasville.

Cobb County

Cobb County is home to four indoor aquatic centers and two outdoor seasonal pools.

Turner Construction Company Announces New LEED Gold Certified Cobb County Superior Courthouse

 

The Cobb County Superior Courthouse in Marietta received its LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council on April 25.  It is the largest LEED Gold certified courthouse in the Southeast. Turner Construction led the design/build effort with design partners Pieper O’Brien Herr Architects and HDR.

“Cobb County had requested a LEED certified project, and Turner and the design/build team were able to deliver the LEED Gold project approximately three months ahead of schedule and give back to the county approximately $1 million,” said Turner Construction Company project manager Winston Williams Jr.

LOCAL PROFILE: John Tanner State Park

CARROLLTON, Ga. – If you enjoy the water and the sun, come out and swim in the “largest sand swimming beach of any Georgia state park”. The park offers swimming, boating, hiking and miniature golf for under $6. The park is named for local businessman John Tanner, who previously owned the park.

The park features fun for the entire family and visitors can swim and boat in the expansive Tanners Lake from sunrise until sunset. For those visiting the park on a fishing trip, the lake allows private boats and those with electric motors, only.

The campground has 31 campsites, six motel units, and a pioneer camp. Most camp goers take advantage of the camping, miniature golf, volleyball and horseshoes. The park opens at 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The park is located at 354 Tanners Beach Road in Carrollton.

The 7th annual "Fun in the Park" Photo Contest will be accepting entries throughout the summer.

Cobb County residents may enter up to 10 snapshots for fantastic prizes and recognition.

WEST METRO – For this week’s installment of Best Spots, we’re compiling a list of Inexpensive Date Spots for you to take your special someone.

In today’s economy, it’s important to find companionship which, in our opinion, is the cheapest form of entertainment. However, it’s the springtime, and people like to get out every now and then. So, check out these suggestions for fun under $15.

Take your date on a trip to Sweetwater Creek State Park. On April 30, the park will hold a Twilight Canoe trip. This sunset ride is ranger-led and only open to adults who can swim and have some canoeing experience. $15 includes the canoe, paddle and PFD. The trip will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will return to shore around 9:00 p.m.

Marietta Square Farmers Market returns in April

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The 2011 Marietta Square Farmers Market begins on Saturday, Apr. 2.

The market will take place along North Park Square in Marietta Square. It is held every Saturday, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon through Nov. 19.

According to market director Johnny Fulmer, more than 60 vendors will participate in the 2011 market, which features items that are grown, made or produced right here in Georgia.

In order to accommodate the market, North Park Square and a portion of Mill Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
