MABLETON, Ga. (WXIA) – Wet roads made for some nasty accidents Monday morning, including one in Mableton where a bystander pulled two people to safety from a burning SUV on Cooper Lake Road, and a fatal wreck on I-285 on Atlanta's west side.
Christopher Matthew Smith-Johnson, 19, died after he was trapped in a Honda Fit that crashed after it stalled on the west side Atlanta Perimeter northbound near Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. Fire-rescue crews were able to get Smith-Johnson, who was driving the Fit, pulled from the wreckage. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta for treatment.
In another morning wreck, police said two SUVs collided along Cooper Lake Road near Demetra Drive at about 8:25 Monday morning. Cobb County Police Officer Mike Bowman said the vehicles slid into each other on a curved section of the road. After a fire broke out in one of the SUVs, a bystander was able to pull two people from the wreckage. The two were taken to a local hospital, one in critical condition. The condition of the second person is not known at this point.
