Conviction upheld for Cobb man who stabbed wife 183 times

ATLANTA -- Georgia's highest court has upheld the murder conviction of a metro Atlanta man who was found guilty of cutting and stabbing his estranged wife 183 times.

In a unanimous ruling released Monday, the Supreme Court of Georgia rejected Donovan Shane Leger's claims that the trial court made numerous errors in handling his case. Instead, the court found there was sufficient evidence for the jury to find Leger guilty of the 2004 slaying.

Authorities say Tracy Leger's body was found by her brother on the ground by a Cobb County home. A medical examiner later determined she had been cut, stabbed and sliced 183 times. During a search of Donovan Ledger's home, police found a book entitled "Fugitive: How to Run, Hide and Survive."

AUSTELL, Ga. -- Cobb County police say one man is dead and another is wounded, following a shooting late Tuesday evening at the Parkview Apartments off Six Flags Drive in Austell.

Sgt. Dana Pierce said the victims were found in the parking lot just before 10 p.m.

Witnesses helped police determine that an unidentified security guard shot one of the men, 27-year-old Andre Oliver, after the two got into a fight.

The second victim, 19-year-old Jacoby Adams, was hit in the leg by a stray round, Pierce said.

Both victims were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where Oliver died from his injury. Adams has since been treated and released, according to Pierce.

The security guard has not been charged.

Court upholds murder conviction in Cobb Co. case

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Supreme Court has unanimously upheld the conviction and life prison sentence for a Douglasville man convicted of stabbing and beating his 16-year-old girlfriend to death in suburban Atlanta.

The court announced the decision involving Matthew Frederick Wilkins on Monday.

The January 2008 killing of Marlisa Wells happened after she confided that she was pregnant and wanted to keep the baby. Wells believed she was pregnant, though an autopsy revealed that she wasn't.

In 2010, Cobb County Superior Court Judge Tain Kell called the slaying of Wells "gruesome" and "brutal" before sentencing Wilkins to life plus 20 years.

Authorities say Wilkins cornered his girlfriend in a basement bathroom, where he stabbed her repeatedly, slammed her head into a toilet tank and drove a fork into her back.

SMYRNA, Ga. -- A 44-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with an attempted bank robbery in Smyrna on April 30.

Meldoshia Winn was taken into custody Tuesday.

Smyrna Police spokesman Capt. Tony Leonard said Winn is accused of trying to rob a Bank of America on South Cobb Drive. Witnesses told police that Winn entered the bank, presented a demand note and showed the teller a gun. When the teller set off a silent alarm and left her window to tell bank management about the robbery, Winn reportedly ran away.

Detectives sent the demand note to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, where crime lab technicians matched fingerprints on the note to Winn, Leonard said.

Winn was arrested in Lithia Springs and processed through the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. She faces charges of robbery, aggravated assault and firearm possession.
